The Staff Accountant will prepare and learn to work on the complete withholding tax cycle associated with licensees’ royalty payments made to foreign licensors. This position is responsible for the accurate and timely tracking of international withholding tax certificates. This position will monitor Via’s numerous patent pool bank accounts, working with the Cash Accountant to accurately apply all cash payments received and ensure reconciliation of the A/R sub­ledger to the GL. Ownership of preparing and sending Initial Fee, Patent Evaluation Fee, and Reimbursable Invoices according to terms of the agreements. This position will also perform month end and quartered duties, assisting the Finance team in driving the monthly financial closing process to ensure its accuracy, integrity, and timeliness. You will perform assigned month end closing activities such as journal entries, GL account reconciliations, and analyses.   • Receive, review, and enter withholding tax certificates to Licensing Accounting system. Communicate with licensees regarding incorrect withholding tax amounts.
  • Follow up with licensees for missing certificates including automated functions and custom communications. Recommend licensees in noncompliance with agreement terms for stricter enforcement actions by Management.
  • Track and obtain outstanding withholding tax certificates to allow later distribution of the certificates to the patent holders.
  • Coordinate with Licensors and ensure all applicable withholding tax forms for reduced treaty withholding rates are filled out.
  • Coordinate with Licensees and Licensors regarding updates in Tax Treaties and new forms requirements.
  • Respond to Licensees, Licensors, and the internal Licensing Accounting Team on inquiries of tax related matters.
  • Track/ Organize and obtain necessary tax forms from patent holders and distribute the forms to licensees for the tax payment to the tax authorities.
  • Maintain the tax rate table in systems.
  • 1042S filing – as request basis and on an annual basis, notify the tax amount for US licensees to prepare the 1042-S.
  • Understands some basics of the international tax and withholding tax related to royalty income and interest based on the tax treaties between countries.
  • Assist Licensing Accounting team in performing monthly and quarterly closes, general ledger account reconciliations, and ad hoc reports as assigned and needed.
  • Analyze GL entries and prepare journal entries for posting as needed – reclasses, amortization, and interest income.
  • Review, record, and amortize accrued liabilities, expenses, and revenues on a monthly basis.
  • Work as needed with Legal Operations team to ensure that Licensing Accounting’s requests are handled in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to continuous system implementations and process improvements.
  • Understand the internal control at Via and maintain proper documentation and backup. Work with Internal Control and outside auditors on Sarbanes Oxley compliance audit.
  • Assist team members as needed. Analysis and other Ad Hoc projects as assigned.




  • A minimum of 3 years’ accounting experience, or equivalent, preferably in the Tax and/or General Ledger areas.
  • Knowledge of accounting policies and internal controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively apply principles of accounting in a business environment gained through experience.
  • Must be highly motivated, with high degree of accuracy, and ability to prioritize multiple tasks and organize work to meet
  • deadlines without direct supervision.
  • A positive attitude, with a strong initiative to learn, and ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Must possess good analytical skills and good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient knowledge in Microsoft Office with emphasis in Excel (VLookup, Pivot Tables, If/Then Statements, etc.) and
  • knowledge of SAP a plus.
