- This role requires qualification or near qualification as a European Patent Attorney.
- The European Patent Office (EPO) is central to Dolby’s global patent prosecution activities; the ideal candidate will be a qualified European Patent Attorney and have a technical background in electronics/software/computer-implemented inventions closely related to Dolby’s core technologies (audio and video processing).
- The candidate will work in a highly complex legal and technical environment and is expected to substantially influence and support Dolby’s in-house patent prosecution and filing activities (globally and regionally).
- Previous in-house experience is preferred but not necessary.
He/she will be responsible for obtaining an adequate scope of protection for Dolby’s patent applications from his/her patent prosecution activities with the European Patent Office. He/she will directly deal with the EPO (verbally and in writing), representing Dolby as a patent attorney, and sign the official paperwork. Some original applications and reply drafts are expected to be drafted by the candidate – while making sure that said work products align with Dolby’s business needs (licensing and products). The results obtained by the candidate in the international phase before the EPO serve as a blueprint for further patent prosecution in other jurisdictions worldwide (global impact).
- On a regional level, the candidate is expected to provide patent advice and support to Dolby’s six R&D & engineering offices in Europe as needed.
- The candidate will need to lead by influence and be able to organize, conduct and successfully and efficiently conclude internal meetings with other Dolby experts of all levels – as well as with external parties such as IP law firms and consultants.
- Significant initiative in suggesting and implementing highly-detailed global patent filing and prosecution strategies and their continuous improvement is expected, including self-initiated own assignments – in transatlantic collaboration with both legal and technical experts.
- He/she will work mostly independently.
- The role is one of the founding roles for Dolby Ireland and plays a critical part in building the Dublin hub culture and resiliency.
- Ability to evaluate data and make decisions quickly that will minimize risk while delivering the most value for the company, even when there is ambiguity.
- Contemplate decisions and trade-offs through the lens of what will deliver the most value for the company.
- Think and act with speed. In times of uncertainty or when things simply don’t go as planned – pivot and demonstrate adaptability.
- Create an environment where diversity and different points of view are valued.
- Lead change with colleagues and stakeholders when necessary.
