The Director of Legal Operations will lead a team of legal operations professionals and oversee all law department operations management for Dolby’s worldwide Legal team of 200 personnel.  This role will partner with Dolby’s company-wide business, technology, legal, and finance teams to ensure that legal department operational matters, technology systems, outside counsel, and vendor processes are handled efficiently and effectively and will also lead strategies for effective communications and events throughout the department and serve as a center of excellence for process and operational activities.  This will require developing a deep understanding of the company’s business, strategies, processes, and technologies. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Planning:  Support the legal department’s long-term strategy and change management, aligning yearly goals and corresponding metrics.
  • Communications:  Lead communications and event planning for the legal department, including all-hands and global legal summits.
  • Professional Development and Team Building:  Manage our existing, high-performing team of legal operations professionals, while fostering a culture of growth, development, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Professional Services Management:  Manage and support streamlined outside counsel and vendor processes, negotiate optimal fee arrangements, and drive governance of billing guidelines.
  • Alternative Support Models:  Strategically oversee personnel resource fulfillment and technology platform roadmap for the legal department.
  • Technology Support:  Design, develop, and implement best-in-class systems, policies, and processes to ensure maximum efficiency and alignment company-wide.  Source, evaluate, test, implement, and support technology solutions relevant to legal operations including CLM, e-billing, patent docketing, and more
  • Financial Management:  Work with our finance team to help manage the department budget, track accruals and forecasting, identify spending trends, potential cost savings, and efficiency opportunities.
  • Data Analytics:  Collect and analyze relevant data from department tools and industry sources, define objectives to provide metrics, and work with our Intelligence team to develop dashboards that drive efficiencies and optimize spend.
  • Knowledge Management:  Enable efficiencies by creating seamless access to legal and department institutional knowledge through the organization and centralization of key templates, policies, processes, and other knowledge materials.
  • Cross-Functional Alignment:  Create and drive relationships with other key company functions, such as IT, Finance, and People and Places.

 

Qualifications:

  • B.A. or B.S. degree and 8-10 years of overall direct experience in law department operations or contract administration, including a leadership position in the legal operations function for a U.S. headquartered public company with global operations.  J.D. and/or another relevant post-graduate degree is a plus.
  • 5 years of leadership and management experience in a legal operations group with deep knowledge of best practices for companies similarly sized to Dolby and comfort working closely with legal and company executives.
  • Extremely comfortable with technology and excellent knowledge of IT systems. Able to play a leading role in selecting, configuring, testing, maintaining, and explaining technology solutions.
  • Extremely high work quality and precision – able to resolve time sensitive issues with a high degree of precision and exhibit strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexible mindset, willingness to do hands-on work, and ability to define a vision for the function.
  • Self-starter who will continuously look for opportunities to improve processes.
  • Builds constructive and effective relationships throughout the organization and understands how to work collaboratively across business units.
  • Ideal candidate will have demonstrated an ability to manage a fast-paced and growing legal department’s operational needs.
