For this high functioning team, the nature of the work benefits from frequent in-office presence, and employees may be expected to work from a company office up to four days per week. The Legal Department provides core legal support to all Dolby functions, runs several IP-centric businesses, and leads government relations.
The Director of Intelligence, Data, and Modeling – Legal & Patent Licensing is a leadership role responsible for building and operationalizing an end-to-end intelligence, analytics, and modeling capability foundational to Dolby’s Patent Licensing and IP Protection strategy. This role extends beyond traditional analytics to include market intelligence, economic and royalty modeling, scenario planning, and AI-enabled decision support across bilateral and pool-based licensing programs.
This position will drive and evolve a multi-year intelligence and analytics roadmap for the Legal, IP Protection, and Patent Licensing organization—translating complex market dynamics, incomplete data, and legal frameworks into clear, actionable insights. The role serves as a key connector across licensing strategy, legal, finance, and data engineering, ensuring data is accurate, accessible, and actionable.
This role is responsible for communicating the business impact of data transformation efforts, demonstrating value through measurable outcomes, and supporting adoption of advanced analytics and AI across the licensing lifecycle.
Core Responsibilities
Intelligence, Data & Analytics Strategy
- Define and deliver the data, intelligence, and analytics roadmap for Legal and Patent Licensing, aligned with long-term licensing growth and portfolio objectives
- Establish an intelligence framework integrating market data, licensee data, financial outcomes, patent assets, and external signals to enable informed decision-making
- Prioritize analytics investments by balancing speed, rigor, and business impact in evolving environments
Market Intelligence & Competitive Analysis
- Lead the aggregation and analysis of global market intelligence across relevant industries (e.g., audio, video, consumer electronics, automotive, and emerging device ecosystems)
- Develop models that translate technology adoption and licensing dynamics into forecastable business opportunities
- Monitor competitive and ecosystem developments, including standards evolution, patent pools, and enforcement trends
Economic, Royalty & Scenario Modeling
- Design and continuously improve economic and royalty models supporting licensing agreements, patent pools, enforcement scenarios, and new program development
- Build scenario-based forecasting models evaluating a range of outcomes based on varying assumptions
- Partner with Finance and Licensing teams to ensure models support decision-making and long-term planning
AI, Advanced Analytics & Decision Support
- Lead the application of AI and machine learning to legal and licensing use cases (e.g., compliance risk, forecasting, workflow automation)
- Identify and pilot high-impact use cases and support transition from experimentation to practical application
Data Infrastructure, Engineering & Visualization
- Oversee the design and evolution of data pipelines, models, and analytics platforms supporting Legal and Patent Licensing
- Promote data quality, transparency, and governance aligned with legal and compliance standards
- Enable development of clear, executive-ready dashboards and visualizations
Strategic Partnership & Cross-Functional Leadership
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., IP Protection, Patent Licensing, Legal Operations, Finance, Technology Standards) to align analytics with business priorities
- Translate analytical outputs into clear, accessible insights for diverse stakeholders
- Support development of a high-performing team spanning analytics, data engineering, and market intelligence
Impact Communication & Change Leadership
- Communicate the business impact of data and intelligence initiatives with clear linkage to outcomes and risk management
- Support adoption of data-informed decision-making across licensing and legal workflows
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Finance, Engineering, or a related quantitative field
Experience
- Experience leading analytics, intelligence, or modeling functions in patent licensing, intellectual property, legal, finance, or related environments
- Experience synthesizing market data in technology-driven industries
- Experience developing and maintaining economic or royalty models
- Ability to engage effectively with cross-functional and senior stakeholders
Technical Skills
- Experience with Databricks and business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau)
- Proficiency in SQL and Python for data analysis and modeling
- Experience working with large, complex datasets

Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with FRAND licensing principles, standards-essential patents, or patent pool environments

The San Francisco/Bay Area base salary range for this full-time position is $212,000 - 292,000, which can vary if outside this location, plus bonus, benefits, and some roles may also include equity. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, competencies, experience, market demands, internal parity, and relevant education or training.
