For this high functioning team, the nature of the work benefits from frequent in-office presence, and employees may be expected to work from a company office up to four days per week. The Legal Department provides core legal support to all Dolby functions, runs several IP-centric businesses, and leads government relations.
Dolby is dedicated to the development of next‑generation audio and video technologies. Dolby is seeking a Litigation Counsel to join its growing team. This role involves analyzing and assessing disputes across a wide range of practice areas, providing practical legal guidance to legal, business, and engineering teams, and proactively identifying opportunities to mitigate risk. Based in San Francisco, this position reports to Dolby’s Vice President within the Global Dispute Resolution and Litigation team.
Responsibilities
- Support day‑to‑day management of patent and commercial disputes, as well as other intellectual property, employment, and regulatory matters, across domestic and international jurisdictions, including pre‑litigation, litigation, and arbitration. Serve as a key member of the litigation team, working closely with outside counsel on strategy, pleadings, discovery, and substantive patent issues such as claim construction, infringement, and validity.
- Develop and implement strategic plans for asserting Dolby’s intellectual property rights (including contract, copyright, trademark, patent, and know‑how) across multiple domestic and international forums.
- Support the Intellectual Property Protection team on license compliance and enforcement matters, including pre‑litigation dispute resolution and breach‑of‑contract issues.
- Draft and negotiate settlement agreements related to these matters. Manage incoming subpoenas, third‑party discovery requests, and bankruptcy notices.
- Provide internal training related to litigation, contract interpretation, and effective dispute management practices.
- Assist, as needed, with disputes arising across Dolby’s non‑licensing businesses, including commercial and corporate matters, with an emphasis on providing practical solutions for internal business teams.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree and admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (California preferred).
- Three to five years of litigation experience, with two to three years of experience in intellectual property litigation (patent, trade secret, trademark, and/or copyright) preferred.
- Educational background or professional experience in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related technical field is helpful but not required.
- Demonstrated ability to take a strategic approach to legal practice and to develop and execute legal strategies that support business objectives across a range of practice areas.
- Ability to work independently to develop and advance legal strategies while building effective working relationships with business leaders and team members across the organization.
The San Francisco/Bay Area base salary range for this full-time position is $190,000 - $260,000, which can vary if outside this location, plus bonus, benefits, and some roles may also include equity. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, competencies, experience, market demands, internal parity, and relevant education or training.
