Dolby Laboratories is seeking a Patent Specialist based in San Francisco, CA. As a member of the IP Operations team, you will report to the Manager of Docketing and play a crucial role in the Patents Group to help establish and protect our rights to our innovations. You will support our team in tasks related to U.S. and foreign filing and prosecution. You will work cooperatively with a large team of in-house attorneys, patent agents, and patent paralegals, and possibly outside counsel, as well. You must be comfortable with multi-tasking and prioritization in a fast-paced environment with close attention to detail, accuracy, and timeliness.



Essential Job Functions

  • Prepare, obtain signatures, and record patent-related forms such as assignments, foreign filing license requests, issue fee payments, corrected ADS, etc. with USPTO
  • Prepare formal documents, such as POAs and declarations
  • Enter patent references into docketing system and review docketed patent information for accuracy in Anaqua docketing software
  • Provide administrative support, such as making photocopies, preparing FedEx packages, and other support activities as assigned
  • Scan, download, and save certificates, search reports, and route correspondence into electronic files
  • Copy and file hard copy patent certificates and assignment originals
  • File soft copies of invoices and related emails into electronic files
  • Perform word processing and complex Excel spreadsheet functions including documents, graphs, tables, and database retrieval
  • Ensure compliance with patent handling procedure

  • Perform duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or IP Operations Leadership Team



Knowledge, Skills, Experience, and Education Required

  • Bachelor degree or the equivalent in experience
  • Minimum of five years of patent-related legal experience
  • Both in-house and private practice law firm experience a plus
  • Collaborative and team-oriented; eager to share information and facilitate others’ success
  • Adaptable, open-minded, and intellectually curious
  • Demonstrates integrity and honesty in all matters
  • Exhibits professionalism and composure in stressful situations and in meeting short deadlines
  • Patent research skills, such as effective working knowledge of online research tools, patent office websites and databases: PAIR, Espacenet, EPO Plus, Patentscope
  • Experience with docket management software a plus
  • Ability to read, understand, and extract relevant information accurately from legal documents
  • Strong skills in MS Word and Excel
  • The ability and willingness to learn new software applications
  • Strong oral, written, and organizational skills with demonstrated attention to detail
  • An ability to work both independently and collaboratively
