Responsible for the optical engineering of laser-illuminated projection systems from concept, design, prototype, and testing phases through to completion.  The successful candidate will have a proven track record in optical engineering with at least some experience in projector design. 

Duties and Responsibilities

 Design optical systems related to laser-illuminated projection.

 Conduct measurements and optimize optical systems to confirm performance to design goals.

 Lead development of new laser and projection technologies, tools, and methods, and document progress.

 Provide input to the design team regarding implementation limitations and suggest alternate approaches.

 Author patent applications in the field of laser illumination display technologies.

 Write documentation covering designs and procedures.

 Actively engage with suppliers and partners including events such as trade shows and industry meetings.

 Troubleshoot failures, investigate artifacts and other issues.

 Clearly communicate problems to the rest of the development group through Dolby’s formal tracking systems and following the process to ensure resolution.

Education, Skills, Abilities, and Experience Required

 Master’s degree or bachelor’s degree in optics, optical engineering, or related field plus at least 5 years of relevant professional experience.

 Proven in-depth expertise in designing optical systems.

 Familiarity with building and testing optical systems.

 Expert in using sequential and non-sequential optical Zemax models and/or other optical design software.

 Experience with opto-mechanical tolerance analysis and design for manufacturing.

 Familiarity with CAD software that interfaces with optical models.

 Methodical and detail-oriented with strong analytical and organizational skills.

 Able to work independently to achieve goals.

 Great people skills, including the ability to collaborate successfully with team members from mechanical engineering and other engineering groups.

 Ability to multitask, perform under pressure, and meet deadlines.

 Position is based in San Francisco.
