Job Description

Staff Hardware Design Engineer:


The Dolby Cinema team is looking to add a Staff Hardware Design Engineer to our Hardware Engineering team. The Cinema HW team is a small core development group that is responsible for the design and productization of Dolby products for the cinema environment. This is a rare opportunity to join a highly skilled set of electrical engineers in making envisioned technologies into actual sellable products. At Dolby, we pursue technology innovation and revolution within our product development process. This often involves investigating all available technologies or creating new technologies which allow our products to obtain the “best of class” or even creating a new higher class of product performance. As part of our team, you will be involved in the electrical design of both audio and video products for the cinema. We are looking for an individual with a solid history of taking electronic products through the entire product design cycle from product requirements to production.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Act as an Electrical / Electronic Engineering subject matter expert within the Cinema Group
  • Able to work independently or work as part of a larger development team as specific projects require
  • Determine and document product requirements for new products
  • Create development timelines working in association with the assigned Program Manager
  • Establish and meet product cost targets requirements
  • Perform board level detailed design, analysis, and bench testing
  • Use simulation tools to ensure performance of new designs (signal integrity, power integrity, & etc.)
  • Interface with the PCB design team and provide guidance as needed during the PCB layout process
  • Validate product performance through the EVT, DVT and PVT process
  • Work with the contract manufacturer and Dolby Operations team to release products to production
  • Support production for end of life (EOL) and alternate source parts on an as needed basis


Minimum Requirements:

  • A B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
  • 6 -10 years of experience in detailed electronic product design
  • Familiar with both analog and digital circuit design techniques
  • Use of schematic design tools (ORCAD, Mentor & etc.)
  • Experienced with the detailed design of complex digital circuits (including some or all)
    • Processors: DSP, Microprocessors, DRAM, FLASH
    • Programmable Logic (FPGA): Xilinx (AMD) and/or Altera (Intel)
    • Standard Interfaces: I2C, SPI, Ethernet, USB, HDMI, RS-232
  • Knowledgeable in high-speed interface techniques
    • Application of transmission lines, termination, and the evaluation of crosstalk
    • PCB stack-up and characteristic impedance
  • Capable of board level Power Supply design and analysis
    • LDO, Switching power supplies & PMICs
  • Good documentation skills (using MS Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint & etc.)


Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with digital display concepts (LCDs & etc.) and the associated physical interfaces
  • Familiarity with analog simulation tools (SPICE or LTSpice)
  • Familiarity with the use of signal and power integrity tools (HyperLynx or SiSoft/MATLAB)
  • An understanding of consumer and professional video interfaces (SDI or HDMI)
  • An understanding of consumer and professional audio interfaces (Analog, AES, AES67 & etc.)
  • Able to create sensitive analog designs using op-amps, BJT and MOSFETs
  • Fluent in a higher-level programming language (C or C++)
  • Capable of development in an HDL language (VHDL or Verilog)
  • Previous experience with BIOS bring-up on new processor designs
  • An understanding of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) design, modeling, and implementation methods
  • Feedback and Control System design methods
  • AC-DC power conversion design techniques
  • Power amplifier design
