About Dolby’s Patent Licensing Group

 

 

The Patent Licensing group is focused on generating value from Dolby’s foundational technology innovations

through standards-based licensing programs. These include essential media technologies such as AVC, HEVC, VVC, and AAC, which underpin the global media ecosystem and enable the delivery of high-quality content to billions of users worldwide. The group plays a strategic role in shaping industry standards, supporting licensing initiatives, and ensuring Dolby’s continued influence and leadership in media technology.

 

 

Position Summary

 

 

The Vice President, Technology and Standards is the senior technical leader within Dolby’s Patent Licensing group. This role is responsible for setting and executing the long-term technology strategy that supports Dolby’s licensing objectives, with a focus on standardized technologies in media, AI, video, and audio. The ideal candidate is a forward-looking technologist who can anticipate industry shifts, influence global standards, and translate complex technical developments into strategic business opportunities.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Technology & Strategy

 

  • Define and lead the technology roadmap for the Patent Licensing group, ensuring alignment with Dolby’s long-term business goals.
  • Identify and evaluate emerging technologies and trends in media and AI that may impact future licensing opportunities.

 

Standards & Industry Leadership

 

  • Represent Dolby in international standards bodies and industry consortia, advocating for technical directions that align with Dolby’s IP and licensing strategy.
  • Lead Dolby’s technical contributions to standards development, ensuring strategic alignment with licensing programs.

 

Executive Communications

 

  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and persuasively to executive leadership and cross functional stakeholders.
  • Translate technology strategy into actionable business insights and licensing opportunities.

 

Partner Collaboration & Influence

 

  • Partner with Dolby’s Advanced Technology Group as well as external research organizations to align long-term innovation with licensing strategy.
  • Collaborate with product management and licensing teams to ensure technical strategy supports business offerings and market needs.

 

Organizational Leadership

 

  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team of technologists and standards experts.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence across internal and external research partnerships.

 

Operational Excellence

 

  • Develop and manage technology budgets, ensuring efficient allocation of resources across initiatives.
  • Oversee technical planning and execution for licensing-related programs and standards participation.

 

 

Required Experience

 

  • Proven experience in senior technology leadership roles within media, AI, or communications
  • technologies.
  • Recognized and respected leader with strong visibility and influence across international standards and media technology communities.
  • Deep expertise in video and audio coding standards, AI applications in media, and global standards ecosystems.
  • Strong understanding of patent licensing models and IP strategy.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated success in leading cross-functional teams and influencing industry standards.
  • Advanced technical degree with 15+ years in media or communications standards; prepared for enterprise-level leadership impact.

Educational requirements

 

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related field; a PhD is preferred.

 

 

 

The San Francisco/Bay Area base salary range for this full-time position is $328,900-$408,500 which can vary if outside this location, plus bonus, benefits, and a substantial equity package. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, competencies, experience, market demands, internal parity, and relevant education or training.
